From U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, a very pithy argument for transit-oriented development of the sort that MARTA’s pushing at five stations:
When you build a transit station, it captures the imagination of real estate developers, and they start to build dense developments and bring amenities to communities. I would urge that we do more to partner with local communities, and to help them develop the tools to utilize land use opportunities.
Foxx was testifying today before the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. Transit-oriented developers, smart growth advocates and the administration are pushing for TODs to get financing help under the upcoming transportation bill reauthorization.
Of course, it’s certainly unclear whether support for TODs and other sustainable ideas will make it into the transportation authorization bill that finally does emerge from Congress. Shoot, it’s even unclear whether the Republican majority can assemble a majority to pass a transportation bill.
